Host and applicant eligibility
Host
An adult child or grandchild, by birth or adoption, living in Canada with citizenship, permanent residence or registered Indian status. An invitation and qualifying income are required.
Applicant
Apply from outside Canada. Insurance, a medical examination, admissibility and genuine temporary intent must be established. Purpose, home ties and finances matter.
Length of stay and visa validity
Applications made from June 22, 2023 qualify for stays of up to five years per entry. Earlier applications and entries have separate rules. Visa expiry and authorized stay are different: leave or apply to extend before your status ends.
Income and family size
Count the host, spouse or partner, dependent children, applicants and people covered by applicable earlier invitations or ongoing sponsorship undertakings. IRCC’s current table, updated July 29, 2025, is in Canadian dollars.

Two income options
- 01
Option 1: host and eligible co-signer income reaches the full threshold in either of the two preceding tax years; provide the CRA Notice of Assessment.
- 02
Option 2: the host and co-signer provide at least 75% in the preceding year; documented applicant income can fill the gap. Prove that applicant income will continue in Canada.

Insurance must cover at least one year from entry, with $100,000 minimum emergency coverage for healthcare, hospitalization and repatriation. Full payment or instalments with a deposit qualify; a quote does not. Use a Canadian insurer or an eligible foreign insurer. Complete the medical with an approved panel physician.
Document checklist
Prepare passport, invitation, relationship and host-status evidence, income records, insurance, medical proof and local visa-office documents. Provide compliant translations for documents outside English or French.
Application steps

From outside Canada, select the applicable online process on IRCC’s application page.

Upload the evidence, pay and submit; follow any biometrics, medical or further-document instructions.

Wait for visa-office instructions before sending your passport. A document request is not final approval.

Visa application
CAD $100 per visa-required applicant.
Additional costs
Biometrics when required, insurance, medicals, translations and visa-centre services are separate. Insurance has no fixed government price.

Does meeting the income threshold guarantee approval?
No. Applicant, host, insurance, medical and temporary-residence requirements must also be met.
