IRCC's processing-time data was updated on September 3, 2026. It now shows an estimated processing time of about 33 months for a citizenship certificate, also called proof of Canadian citizenship, and reports about 136,000 people waiting for a decision.
This service is for a person who needs official evidence that they are already a Canadian citizen. It is different from applying for a grant of citizenship as a permanent resident, and the certificate itself is not a passport or travel document.
A processing time is an estimate, not a deadline
IRCC explains that the figure is an estimate of how long an application received now may take. It is based on the current inventory, available processing capacity and the number of applications IRCC expects to receive. The estimate can change again as those factors change.
The clock starts when IRCC receives a complete application and ends when a decision is made. An incomplete application, a complex file or delays in responding to requests can extend the actual time for an individual case.
Applications from outside Canada and the United States may take longer
IRCC says applicants living outside Canada and the United States who apply through a Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate should add 3 to 4 months for mailing time.
For a minor under 18 living outside Canada and the United States whose application is sent directly to the Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia, IRCC says to add 6 to 8 months to the published processing time.
Confirm that proof of citizenship is the correct application
A citizenship certificate may be needed to confirm status, access certain services or apply for a Canadian passport. Before filing, applicants should confirm that they need proof of citizenship rather than a citizenship grant, passport service or another immigration document.
The live IRCC page remains the controlling source because both the estimate and the number of people waiting can change. Applicants with an existing file should use IRCC's status and processing-time tools for current information about their application type.
