What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an online application management system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to process permanent residency applications from skilled workers. It is one of the fastest and most popular pathways to immigrate to Canada.
Through the Express Entry system, eligible candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during regular Express-Entry-draws.
Express Entry manages the following economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) – via Express Entry-linked streams
General vs. Category-Based Draws
Express-entry-draws are usually held every two weeks. There are two main types of express-entry-draws:
- General Draws: Open to candidates from any of the Express Entry programs. Selection is based purely on CRS score.
- Category-Based Draws: Introduced in 2023, these draws target specific skills or attributes such as:
- Strong French-language proficiency
- Healthcare professionals (e.g., nurses, doctors)
- STEM occupations (e.g., data scientists, engineers)
- Skilled trades (e.g., carpenters, electricians)
- Transport occupations (e.g., truck drivers)
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations
This category-based selection helps Canada respond to critical labor shortages and immigration priorities by focusing on targeted occupations and communities.
Draw results are published regularly, showing the CRS score cut-offs, number of ITAs issued, and whether the draw was general, program-specific, or category-based
If you’re considering applying through Express Entry, it’s essential to keep your profile up to date, monitor the latest draws, and ensure that your documents are ready when you receive an ITA. Candidates with higher CRS scores or those who qualify under targeted categories usually have a better chance of receiving an invitation. Working with a licensed immigration consultant can improve your chances of success and help you avoid costly mistakes.
