Ontario’s New Regulations for Fraudulent Immigration Consultants

The Ontario government has recently introduced a series of strict regulations to address misconduct by immigration consultants. These measures aim to safeguard the rights of immigrants and newcomers by imposing severe financial penalties and long-term or lifetime bans on violators.

Under these new rules, immigration consultants are required to provide clear, written contracts to their clients, display valid licenses, and ensure that clients have full access to their immigration files. These actions are designed to enhance transparency and protect immigrants from exploitation and fraud.

David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, stated: “These new regulations help protect immigrants from consultants who misuse their trust. Immigrants come to Ontario to build a better future for their families, but some unethical individuals exploit their vulnerabilities, jeopardizing their immigration status and finances.”

Key changes include increasing penalties for false statements from $2,000 to $10,000 and introducing lifetime bans for severe violations such as human trafficking.
