No More Co-op Work Permit for Post-Secondary International Students
As of April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a separate co-op work permit to participate in work placements required by their study program — such as co-ops, internships, and practicums.
What Changed?
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has removed the requirement for a separate co-op work permit for post-secondary international students. Students can now complete mandatory work placements — including co-ops, internships, practicums, and mentorship programs — using their valid study permit alone.
This change simplifies the administrative process by requiring only one permit to complete a single study program. It does not increase the number of students authorized to work, nor does it affect temporary resident volumes.
Who Is Eligible?
- Your study permit conditions allow you to work on campus
- You have a letter from your DLI confirming the placement is a program requirement
- You hold a valid study permit (or applied to extend before expiry)
- You are a full-time student at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- Your study program is at least 6 months long and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate
- Your work placement totals 50% or less of your overall program
What About Pending Applications?
If you already submitted a co-op work permit application, you do not need to take any action. IRCC will automatically withdraw all eligible and active co-op work permit applications and will notify applicants by letter.
